Some major U.S. newspapers have been pelted with criticism from Jewish groups and supporters of Israel for their news accounts of the Middle East violence. In Los Angeles, nearly 1,000 subscribers to the Los Angeles Times suspended home delivery of the newspaper for one day to protest what they termed inadequate and pro-Palestinian coverage.

Both the Times and the San Francisco Chronicle failed to cover large Jewish rallies in their cities--40,000 showed up at the Los Angeles event--and Jewish leaders were vocal in their charges of bias, said the Times's news-media reporter David Shaw in an April 28 story.

Key editors at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Washington Post said they received at least 100 e-mails and calls daily at the height of the suicide bombings and the heavy Israeli incursions into Palestinian territories. Editors have defended their attempts to be even-handed, but some admit to mishandling terminology or not covering important aspects of the complicated news developments. …
