The ASIS Board of Directors continually updates the Society's strategic plan based on recommendations by the ASIS Planning Committee, various Society councils and commissions, and membership surveys. One of the board's major roles in implementing the strategic plan is to ensure that the Society's fiscal resources are sufficient to meet the objectives, strategies, and tactics in the plan.

During meetings throughout 2001, the board concluded that the level of current revenues would not allow ASIS International to reach its goals as defined in the plan. All elements of the Society's revenues and expenditures were analyzed in January 2002.

The analysis revealed that while dues have remained the same for the last eight years, membership benefits and the cost to deliver those benefits have increased. ASIS has been able to partially offset the escalating cost of member benefits in the past from nondues revenue sources. While dues are not expected to produce a net surplus, a periodic adjustment becomes necessary to make member benefits as financially self-sustaining as possible. …
