Integrated Systems Are Possible

I read with interest both the Editor's Notebook, "Management's Big Payoff" (March 2002), and the letter, "The New Safety Pyramid" (April 2002). While these two articles have a rather different focus, there is the potential for much synergy between the two.

We have seen, through working with a wide range of companies and safety professionals, many views of which "approach" they deem to be most appropriate for their respective business in terms of a health and safety or risk management philosophy. Many of our clients have moved toward the ISO (9002 and 14001) standards to manage their safety and environmental management systems. Others focus on strict regulatory compliance only. Still others have spent considerable time moving toward the behavioral approach and practice.

Just as there has been a wide convergence of many alternative types of business management strategies, however, so too have we seen and been able to assist quality, environment, health and safety professionals in integrating all these approaches into a comprehensive management system. Many are of the opinion that you cannot integrate a systems approach, such as BSI 18001, with a behavior-based safety approach. …
