Granada sets up rural TV test

Granada Television is to transform a quiet Lancastrian village into a media laboratory to gauge the potential reaction to the "brave new world" of television.

High definition TV, widescreen TV, cable and microwave video distribution systems (MVDSs) will be installed in the village of Waddington for a two-month experimental period. British Telecom and Telefusion are among equipment suppliers and manufacturers supplying Granada with material and systems needed to create the experiment in future TV viewing.

Luise Nandy, series producer behind the scheme, says the experiment will help test in depth consumer demand for the next generation of TV hardware and channels. Nandy accepts the creation of the "media village", which will be featured in a six-part Channel 4 documentary beginning in May, will be too limited in scale to test consumer reactions accurately. But she claims it will still provide one of the most in-depth studies to date.

"Being Lancastrians, we expect the villagers to tell us exactly what they think," says Nandy. …
