A number of grants were awarded to Canadian opera companies under the new Opera Fund, a collaboration between OPERA America and the Professional Opera Companies of Canada. The POCC received $2.5-million from the Canada Council to establish an endowment and support program grants. With this gift, the POCC formed the Canadian Opera Creation Program (COCP), a sister program to The Opera Fund. This year, eight Canadian companies received grants.
Development grants were awarded to Autumn Leaf Performance for a co-production with the Evergreen Club Gamelan of a new work called How It Storms, a gamelan opera with music by Allen Cole and libretto by Maristello Roca; and to Opera Ontario for Screen Test, a co-production with NUMUS, by composer Tim Brady and librettist John Sobol.
A production grant was given to Calgary Opera for Filumena, with music by John Estacio and libretto by John Murell. The new work will be presented as part of Calgary Opera's 2002-03 season and will also be performed at the Banff Arts Festival in 2003. Chants Libres, in partnership with Les coups de Theater, received a production grant for a new children's opera, Pacamambo, based on the book by Wajdi Mouawad, who also wrote the libretto, with music by Zack Settel. …
