This is the third CBC Records release devoted to the vast talent of Victoria-born tenor Richard Margison and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra under Richard Bradshaw, following a disc of French and Italian arias and an offering titled Rarities by Rossini and Verdi. The former was especially outstanding, and the three together demonstrate this singer's phenomenal range of repertoire. Equally at home in French and verismo styles, he shows with this new release that he is also a powerful Verdi singer, who, at his best, can count the likes of Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti as his peers.

Margison shows off his rich timbre and perfect tonal focus in the opener, "Quando le sere al placido" from Luisa Miller. Compared to Pavarotti, who has numbered this aria among his favorites, the Canadian boasts a heftier and darker tone. Neither is preferable, just different and equally stunning. …
