Puzzle World to battle for quiz title slot

Puzzle magazine publisher Harmsworth is set to launch a new title, Puzzle World, in a bid to rival top selling consumer quiz titles the Puzzler and the Puzzler Collection.

The potential market is bigger than for some quality national newspapers. In a cut-throat magazine sector typified by front covers of pretty sailing boats, pictures of ice cream and innocent-looking young women, the Puzzler has continued to hold sway as brand leader with monthly sales of 320,000, which is substantially ahead of the Sunday Correspondent.

Sister bi-monthly title the Puzzler Collection also produced by VNU subsidiary BEAP, sells a healthy 430,000. The biggest non-BEAP titles Puzzle Monthly is believed to sell around 50,000 a month.

Puzzle World magazine intends to launch with an initial 500,000 print run bi-monthly from March, with an initial promotional budget of about 250,000 [pounds].

The retail battle against BEAP by Harmsworth, a subsidiary of Associated Newspapers, is bound to be extremely fierce. …
