Shopping Channel shuts down

The Shopping Channel, the home-shopping station launched on the Astra satellite TV system last year, is facing a likely final shutdown of operations this week.

The channel, launched as a joint venture by the Next mail order company Grattan and Irish-based E-Sat Communications has been running for 14 months.

Backers for the channel, including Next plc chief executive David Jones, were due to make a formal decision on the Shopping Channel's future as this issue of Marketing went to press.

A spokesperson for the Shopping Channel last week blamed the shutdown on its failure to secure continued transponder time.

The channel has been transmited on the Sky Movies transponder between 8am and 1pm, every day.

The Shopping Channel suspended transmissions earlier this month on Sky Movies.

Sky Television says it made clear to the Shopping Channel that its contract for transponder time, originally due to run until this October, would not be renewed.

Instead, Sky Television intends to expand its progamme output on the transponder.

Marketing manager at the Shopping Channel Miriam Thornton says it had hoped to get transponder space on the Astra 1b satellite after the contract with Sky ran out. …
