Could This Be the Age of the Laity? (You May Be Right)

THANK YOU FOR LESLIE SCANLON'S ARTICLE, "HERE comes everybody's church" (May). I found particularly helpful the quote from R. Scott Appleby saying that the church ought to "provide financial and career support for lay ministries and not see them as a stopgap or replacement until we get more priests."

The state of the average parish where I live is dreadful. The priests appear to be going through the motions; the homilies are perfunctory; and the parishioners have their car engines started before they're even out the door--and rightfully so.

And yet, when I attend the lay leadership training conferences that my job in Catholic book publishing brings me to, I find the Spirit alive like nowhere else on the planet.

I concur fully with Appleby that it's time to expand the prophetic and missionary reach of laypeople in the church. Or, better yet, maybe it's time that we organize ourselves, similar to the movement started by Saints Francis of Assisi, Clare, and Dominic that lit the world on fire 700 years ago. …
