Roger Summit to Head Knight-Ridder Electronic Publishing Group
Roger Summit, president and CEO of Dialog Information Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Knight-Ridder, Inc., has been named president of Knight-Ridder's newly created Electronic Publishing Group.
The Electronic Publishing Group includes both Dialog and Vu/Text. The Electronic Publishing Group is part of Knight-Ridder's Business Information Services Division, which also includes the Financial Information Group and the Journal of Commerce.
In making the announcement, Knight-Ridder Vice Chairman Richard G. Capen, Jr. said, "The creation of the Electronic Publishing Group and the promotion of Roger Summit reflect the enormous confidence we have in Roger and the need to adjust to the continuing growth and expansion of our Businss Information Services Division."
David K. Ray, president of BIS, said, "We are extremely pleased with the progress of Dialog and the fit within Knight-Ridder. Last year we began putting the Vu/Text databases into Dialog. This latest step ties the two operations even closer together."
Summit said, "The new structure provides a framework for extending Dialog and Vu/Text services to the customers of both organizations. Furthermore, it will facilitate the expansion of today's services to meet the diverse needs of tomorrow's electronic information service users."

Under the new organization, Summit will continue to serve as presid and information systems and has experience in many areas of computer applications. His pioneering work on development of the Dialog system began in 1962 at the Lockheed Corporation. He was both the designer and project manager for the first-of-its-kind Dialog online information retrieval system in the early 1960s.
Under his subsequent direction, various Dialog derivations were designed for government agencies such as NASA, AEC, and the European Space Agency. In the early 1970s, Dialog was establishd as a commercial information retrieval business within Lockheed's Palo Alto Research Laboratory. The company spun off as a wholly owned subsidiary in 1981. It was purchased by Knight-Ridder in 1988.
Dr. Summit received A.B., M.B.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. He is the author of numerous papers dealing with computer processing of information, and a member of several professional societies. …
