NISO Statistics Standards Out for Review

A proposed revision of Z39.7-1983, the national standard for collecting and reporting library statistics, is being circulated for review by the National Information Standards Organization from September 1-November 30, 1990. Z39.7-199X is priced at $25 and can be ordered from NISO, P.O. Box 1056, Bethesda, MD 20827.

All interested persons are invited to comment on this draft standard. The review period will end November 30, 1990. It is expected that a revised draft, incorporating many of the suggestions received during this three month review, will be completed in 1991.

This proposed revision makes several significant departures from the 1983 edition of the statistics standard. For example, this current draft identifies principal "core" data categories that are appropriate for reporting at the national level and are common among the major types of libraries (public libraries, academic, school, and special) in the U.S.

The revised statistics standard was developed by NISO Standards Committee UU. In preparing this revision, the Standards Committee studied the existing instruments used to collect library statistics by agencies at the national level and reviewed the comments submitted to NISO on the application and use of the 1983 Library Statistics standard. …
