Mack Closes One Plant after Buying Monroe: Printer Acquisition Is Part of Continuing Industry Trend

EASTON, PA.-Mack Printing's acquisition of Monroe Printing Company is just the latest incident for an industry caught in the throes of the magazine ad slump. As demand for print declines, more printers have been forced to consolidate.

By acquiring Monroe Printing, Mack adds four plants to the newly formed holding company of Mack Printing Companies Inc. The Trumbull, Connecticut, and East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, plants specialize in short- to medium-run publications. (Both were part of the Hughes Corporation, a Monroe subsidiary.) Science Press, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, brings strength in non-heatset, web and sheet fed magazine printing. And Specialty Printer of America, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, prints inserts. The four plants employ about 940 people.

Although initially denying any plans for layoffs, Mack decided to close the Trumbull plant by the end of August "for financial reasons." More than 80 employees were affected; some management-level executives were to be relocated. Twenty clients, representing nearly 30 magazines, have transferred their work to Hughes' East Stroudsburg plant. Adding to market share

The merger gives Mack a substantial share of the small- to medium-run publication market, making it one of the largest printers in that category. "Without question, it improves our market share," says Paul Mack, president. "It provides us with a good, strong equipment base.
