Easy to make with edible flowers

Pretty as a picture, these flower-topped cookies make perfect treats for May Day or Mother's Day. With a little supervision, youngsters can shape the cooky frames, spread the syrup "glue," then anchor the edible flowers. An adult should do the baking and make the syrup.

Posy Cookies

3 pared strips of orange peel (orange

part only), each 3 inches long

1 cup sugar

1/3 cup water

Cooky frames (recipe follows)

About 2 dozen edible flowers (choices

        follow), rinsed and drained dry, stem
        ends pinched off

In a 1- to 1 1/2-quart pan, boil peel, sugar, and water on high heat (don't stir) until syrup reaches 238 [degrees]; for accurate reading, tilt pan so syrup covers thermometer base. Discard peel; let syrup stand undisturbed until warm to touch, 30 to 40 minutes. Into each cooky frame, spread 1 teaspoon syrup, then press in 1 or 2 flowers. …
