United Through Professional Commitment

"The challenges of the '90s will be exciting times for our profession. Everchanging pronouncements from governmental and professional bureaucracies which literally change the procedures in our offices from day to day bring about the need for strong leadership and guidance. I will continue the fight for the right of our Society members to practice their profession in a nondiscriminatory environment."

With this pledge, Richard L. Garlock of Portland, Oregon, announced his candidacy for the office of president of the National Society of Public Accountants. Last month, delegates to NSPA's 45th Annual Convention in Denver, Colorado, responded to his call for continued leadership and diligence in maintaining the rights of independent accountants by electing him by unanimous vote to the Society's highest office.

In accepting the gavel of office from outgoing president Walter T. Y. Lau, Garlock announced his theme for the year to be "United Through Professional Commitment."

"For any leader to be successful he needs the commitment of people behind him. It is reassuring to know that I have not only your commitment but the solid history of NSPA's 45 years of commitment to our profession behind me as well. In fact, it would be fair to say that NSPA's whole existence is due to the extraordinary commitment of our members. We have grown from a few founders who had a vision to over 23,000 strong who still share that vision.

"Throughout the years we have become a diversified group. We are licensed and unlicensed, certified, enrolled and accredited. But we have survived this diversity more united than ever through our fundamental commitment to being the best. We are committed to professionalism. That commitment unites us into one. While we may not, as individuals, always agree, we always have the well-being of our organization, the National Society of Public Accountants, in the forefront of our actions and thoughts. …
