A petition to the French government from the candle making industry

"We are suffering from the ruinous competition of a foreign rival who apparently works under conditions far superior to our own for the production of light that he is flooding the domestic market with it at an incredibly low price; for the moment he appears, our sales cease, all the consumers turn to him, and a branch of French industry whose ramifications are innumerable is all at once reduced to complete stagnation. This rival, which is none other than the sun, is waging war on us mercilessly. We ask you to be so good as to pass a law requiring the closing of all windows...skylights, shutters, curtains and blinds...through which the light of the sun is wont to enter houses, to the detriment of the fair industries."

These words are part of an essay penned in 1845 by satirist and free-market philosopher Frederic Bastiat. In his spirit the International Policy Network (IPN) has created the Bastiat Prize.

The main prize will be awarded to a writer who through his/her published writing has promoted economic liberty, the rule of law, and free market ideals, especially in a developing country, where these principles are often difficult to uphold. A junior prize will be awarded to the most promising writer under 27. There will be prize money of $15,000. IPN will also promote the writer's work increasing its exposure around the world.
