Having been a finalist in your 2001 Photographer of the Year competition, I was very much looking forward to trying my luck in this year's competition. However, when I saw the new format and conditions I chose not to enter. I was disappointed that there was only one category this year and that, consequently, the opportunties for winning were much reduced. I believe the rules give your magazine too much freedom to use the images, with any payments "at the discretion of the publisher." I would hope that you would reconsider the rules for the 2003 awards and restore the spirit of the competition, instead of having an attempt at garnering as many free covers as possible.

Ed replies: In planning our Photographer of the Year 2002 competion we wanted to give entrants a taste of what working for a magazine was like. By asking entrants to come up with potential cover images we felt they would need to think about how the image would be used--where the banner would go, where cover--lines would fit and how the image would grab people if it were on a shelf. …
