BSB and Sky are neck and neck in satellite showdown

Sky and British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB) are almost level-pegging in the race for the disposable income of the UK consumer, according to new research.

The Ferguson Consumer Electronics Market Report indicates that of the 14% of UK people interested in satellite TV, 29% favour Sky, while 25% would opt for BSB. But the developing format battle has left nearly half of aspiring dish-owners sitting on the fence awaiting the emergence of a victor.

That undecided 46% may pose problems for both broadcasters and equipment firms in the coming months, because only 3.5% of consumers, according to Ferguson, say they will buy a system this year.

So although BSB is predicting sales of 800,000 for its system within a year of its April 29 launch, this research suggests that the station can count on less than 200,000 consumers buying its receivers in the next 12 months. …
