Vernon set for European post

Robert Maxwell is believed to have poached Media and Airtime Sales' (MATS) new business director Martin Vernon to become ad director of the weekly European, due to launch in six weeks.

According to industry sources, Vernon will soon join the former managing director of the International Herald Tribune in London, Robin Mackichan, who was appointed head of the European operation earlier this month.

Vernon, who resigned last year as managing director of Maxwell's Headway contract publishing division, was previously launch ad director of the ill-fated London Daily News, which Maxwell launched and closed over a period of five months in 1987.

Neither Vernon himself nor MATS managing director. Craig Pearman were available for comment as Marketing went to press. Executives at Maxwell's Mirror Group also declined to comment.

Vernon will have to overcome considerable industry scepticism over the chances for the European, which launches on May 11.

The paper's launch has been postponed more than once since it was first announced. …
