NIAAA Announces Homeless Demonstration Awards

NIAAA, in consultation with NIDA, has awarded 14 cooperative agreements for research demonstration projects on alcohol and other drug abuse treatment for homeless individuals. Congress appropriated $16.4 million in FY-90 for the program, authorized under the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act.

A NIAAA spokesperson said that research suggests that from 30% to 40% of the homeless have alcohol problems and that at least 10% to 20% have a problem with other drugs, including cocaine and heroin. The purpose of the research demonstrations is to develop knowledge about effective interventions for these populations. Primary objectives include reduction of consumption of alcohol and other drugs, enhanced levels of shelter and residential stability, and elevation of the economic and/or employment status of the target groups.

The projects offer a range of interventions to several subpopulations, including women with children, those with psychiatric and alcohol or drug dependence diagnoses, veterans and American Indians. Interventions include case management, residential and nonresidential treatment and recovery programs, day treatment, supportive and transitional housing, and pre-vocational training and job placement. …
