Dear Readers,

Coincidence and conspiracy are interesting phenomena, especially in Washington and, upon closer scrutiny, no doubt elsewhere.

What brings this to mind isn't the dark whir of prattle in the nation's capital or on the various world stages. Though certainly J. Michael Waller's cover story on America at war, Martin Arostegui's special report from Afghanistan on the search for Osama bin Laden and how he got away, and Martin Edwin Andersen's story on the heroic Col. John Boyd ought to raise questions about how the world is run.

Even Christopher Whalen's story about how trial lawyers have become "our" bosom buddies doesn't raise suspicions of conspiracy to which we might be vulnerable about a class of people probably held in lower esteem even than most journalists.

Nor does Brandon Spun's article on students braving terrorism in Israel surprise us--spunk really is the sauce of life among the young. And even this week's symposium, which pits Armstrong Williams and Rep. …
