Article excerpt

Masterfoods was formed in January 2002 by the merger of Mars Confectionery and Pedigree Masterfoods. The business is a subsidiary of Mars UK Ltd, whose parent company is the privately owned US corporation Mars Incorporated, whose principle business interests include branded snack foods, pet care products, main meal foods, electronic automated payment systems and drinks vending.

Masterfoods in the UK, along with Irish operations, comprise the Western region of Masterfoods Europe.

In the UK, confectionery is produced at a plant in Slough, Berkshire, while the pet food products are produced in Melton Mowbray, Peterborough and Birstall, with an office in Waltham-on-the-Wolds. Main meal products are made at a factory in King's Lynn.

In 1935, a UK petfood business was formed, which later became Pedigree Petfoods. In 1940 Forrest Mars returned to the US and introduced Uncle Ben's rice and founded M&M Ltd. In 1964, he merged his company with his deceased father's business under the Mars name.

Mars products are consumed in more than 100 countries around the world.

The company employs some 30,000 associates and has manufacturing facilities and offices in more than 60 countries. …
