At the Southeast Regional Conference in Lexington, Ky., in April, Douglas Thomas received the Chester W. Freeman Citizen Award. Thomas is the chairman of the Recreation Advisory Board in Ormond Beach, Fla. Also, Dr. Phil Ilea received the 2002 Harold D. Meyer Professional Excellence Award. Ilea is chair of the Department of Parks and Recreation and Tourism Management at North Carolina State University.

Traffic congestion in Durham, N.C., has dropped in just one year thanks to joint efforts of the county commissioners and the regional transit agency. Together, they developed a comprehensive plan for commuter trip reductions through transportation-demand management strategies. Spalding County (Ga.) seniors will be building bone mass, thanks to the Spalding County Parks and Recreation Department. Kelly Leger, senior center supervisor, and Louis Greene, recreation director, submitted a winning proposal to the Georgia Commission on Women for support to fight osteoporosis in their community. Osteoporosis is a bone-thinning disease that is epidemic in Georgia, costing the taxpayers close to $1 million a year. …
