UMI's General Periodicals Ondisc Now Available

UMI's (University Microfilms International) General Periodicals Ondisc system is now available and has begun shipping to customers. The CD-ROM system provides access to articles in image format from approximately 150 of the most frequently used general-interest periodicals, including such titles as Time, Harper's, Fortune, Audubon, and Newsweek.

The database contains full-text images of articles that cover the arts, business, computers, consumer issues, currents, education, health, literature, politics, psychology, science and technology. Full-text images appear as in the original journals and include all photographs, charts, tables, and illustrations. Articles are included with the permission of copyright owners but further reproduction is prohibited.

The new database brings one-stop search and retrieval capabilities to users who need to research general topics, everything from third-world politics to the state of national child care crisis. The combination of broad title coverage and full-text image format makes the system ideal for a variety of users.

"UMI isn't just putting any obscure title they can get on these databases, they're including the titles that people need," said Bob Williams, Kennesaw State College library director, who has subscribed to the General Periodicals Ondisc image system solely on the merits of its titles, which he describes as first-rate. Kennesaw currently has the UMI Business Periodicals Ondisc (BPO) system in its library and has ordered four additional BPO workstations due to the demand. …
