Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. recently unveiled QuickLAN for connecting workstation PC work groups (two to nine users). QuickLAN is a serial port LAN that provides file sharing (with record looking), peripheral sharing, e-mail, remote access, and basic Novell Netware Connectivity. QuickLAN sells for $899.00 for a four port model and $1,199.00 for eight ports. It includes a multi-port serial card and all software to set up a fully functional LAN.

"QuickLAN is for the user whose PCs remain unconnected because of the complexity and expense of traditional LANs, but who still has the need to share files and peripherals among a small number of users," states Dr. Raghu Sharma, president of Multi-Tech. "In addition to the basics of file and peripheral sharing, QuickLAN offers some versatile extras. With remote access, it provides easy and inexpensive connectivity to the network's files and resources via modem. And, for the organization that needs occasional access to a Novell LAN, the QuickLAN hub can function as a Novell LAN node when connected via a network interface card (NIC), which is plugged into the hub.
