Pret A Manger, the sandwich chain that has built a loyal following among UK office-workers, is hunting a top-level marketer to lead its plans for global expansion.

The company, which is one third owned by McDonald's, is employing an industry headhunter to conduct the search for an international marketing and branding chief and is expected to make an appointment shortly.

The role is being created to give Pret A Manger a consistent brand identity and to build the chain into one of the most recognised food brands in the world.

It is thought the marketer will report directly to Andrew Rolfe, the chairman and chief executive of Pret A Manger who joined the company in 1998.

Pret, which declined to comment on the search, opens its first outlet in Japan today (Wednesday) in the heart of one of Tokyo's main commercial districts.

It plans to open up to 80 more shops in Japan by the end of 2004.

The company owns more than 120 shops in the UK, 13 in New York and five in Hong Kong. …
