* 3Com's Urban Challenge Grants offer cities, schools, and other community agencies the opportunity to work collaboratively to develop proposals for providing information technology access to members of the community. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis, so although the deadline for this application period is November 1, it is to the applicant's benefit to submit a proposal prior to that deadline. * High school teachers are invited to participate in the new Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition, sponsored by The College Board and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The competition is designed to increase student and teacher interest in the study of epidemiology and public health. To enter, a teacher submits a curriculum for an epidemiology course or an interdisciplinary unit that incorporates the study of epidemiology. Six national winners will receive $15,000 each; 18 regional winners will each be awarded $5,000 each. All application information is available at yes/index.html. Entries are due October 15. A student competition based on original research will be instituted in the 2003-04 school year.

* Teachers of pre-K through fourth grade are invited to apply for a Digi-Block Math Grant for math manipulatives and training valued up to $5,000. Applicants submit a proposal for a math program that will incorporate the use of Digi-Blocks, explaining the purpose, objectives, and an overview of the program, along with an evaluation plan. A current resume and a letter of support from a site administrator, department chair, or district curriculum specialist are also required.
