The San Juans, revisited

Lawrence Cheek's story on the San Juan Islands ("Islands of Delight," August, page 82) left out a detail that my wife and I discovered last April. When driving around Lopez Island, it's very important to keep at least one hand at the top of the steering wheel. That's so you can wave back easily when the driver of an oncoming car waves at you. A full, palm-up wave is not necessary; the index finger or first two fingers are satisfactory. We got so comfortable with this greeting, it was hard to adjust to the "waveless" drivers when we returned to the mainland.

I was wondering why the Inn at Ship Bay (360/376-3933) wasn't included in your lodging and dining list on Orcas Island. It is a beautiful inn with reasonably priced rooms, and it also has a restaurant with fabulous meals. The view and the ambience are spectacular.
