Marketers earn more on the Continent

Marketing executives, behind managing directors, are the highest paid executives in six out of ten European countries, according to a survey released last week by the management and computer consultants P-E International. Higher wages on the Continent could become an issue in the UK, making it more difficult for marketers to recruit.

Marketers receive heftier pay packets in Denmark, France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland, compared to their fellow executives in such management positions as finance, manufacturing and personnel.

Marketing executives get the second biggest salaries in the UK, Belgium and West Germany. In addition, in the UK, marketers are second to research and development and ahead of manufacturing.

"Marketing is the vehicle by which companies will enter foreign markets in the lead up to 1992 and beyond," says Tom Raftery, the principal consultant at P-E International. "1992 is all about a market and it's a very big market at that," he says.

P-E International's Remuneration in Europe report is based on information from 38,000 executives from 3500 companies in Belgium, Denmark, France, West Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. …
