COURTESY OF ITS GLOBAL PARTNER--Land Rover--Biosphere Expeditions is offering two free places to Geographical readers on its forthcoming expedition to the Polish Carpathian mountains to snow-track wolves. And there's more: to prepare the two lucky winners for this amazing expedition, Land Rover is throwing in a day's professional off-road driver training at one of the company's Land Rover Experience Centres. All you have to do is prove that you're up for the challenge.

The adventure

Biosphere's expeditions are scientific projects in the shape of genuine wildlife expeditions that place ordinary people with no research experience alongside scientists who are at the forefront of conservation work. Expedition team members are people from all walks of life, of all ages, who are looking for an adventure with a conscience and a sense of purpose. At least two-thirds of the expedition's cost will benefit the project directly. Biosphere Expeditions always takes its teams to work with local people and scientists, and the work is supervised by an expedition leader who is with the team at all times.

The Poland expedition will take the lucky winners in a Land Rover Defender to the winter mountains of the Carpathians, to snow- and radio-track wolves in an urgent effort to prevent them from being declared legitimate hunting targets and thus being hunted into extinction locally. Tracking will take place out on the hills using radio telemetry equipment, and will include the recording of tracks, scratch marks, kills and any other signs of wolf presence. There may also be wolf trapping and radio-collaring; the Biosphere Expeditions team are already credited with capturing and radio-collaring the first wolf in the history of the Polish Carpathians.

The Carpathians are medium-sized mountains (up to 1,346 metres) with a winter climate and are covered in thick temperate forests and usually, snow. Base camp is a comfortable mountain cabin, complete with log fire and modern amenities. Flights go from the UK to Krakow, where the expedition leader meets the travelling team of up to six and leads the way to the mountain base.
