An Annotated Bibliography: Essential Resources for Radical Teachers

This bibliography reflects the personal and pedagogical interests of four women who met in the secondary teacher education program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At the time of their meeting, Kelly Hayek and Tracy Wagner were enrolled in courses taught by Emily Meixner and Nikola Hobbel, doctoral candidates and teaching assistants. All four of us share concerns regarding social justice, equity, and student-centered learning, all four of us are (or were) English teachers, and the conversation that began in our teacher education classrooms has continued for over two years. What follows is an annotated bibliography of sources that have inspired and sustained us along the way.

1. Ayers, W., Hunt, J, and Quinn, T. (Eds.). (1998). Teaching for Social Justice: A Democracy and Education Reader. New York: The New Press.

An eclectic and useful assemblage of theoretically savvy and practitioner-oriented essays on schools and schooling written by elementary and secondary teachers as well as teacher educators. Included in the reader are numerous personal narratives that describe the various ways in which teachers are struggling to challenge the educational status quo and advocate for disfranchised students.

2. Bauer, Marion Dane, Editor. (1994). Am I Blue? Coming Out From the Silence. New York, NY: Harper-Collins.

A powerful anthology of short stories about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues for young adults. Perfect read for young adults dealing with issues of sexual orientation, or for teachers striving to present varied perspectives in classroom curriculum.

3. Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture. San Francisco, California: Bitch Publications.

A biannual journal of striking narratives and essays perfect for spicing up any classroom discussion with media "real-world" ties students will immediately recognize. Recent articles include the non-presence of African American women in science fiction, the dearth of female heroines in recent young adult literature, and a treatise on the television show "Boston Public."

4. Carey-Webb, Allen. (2001). Literature & Lives: A Response-Based, Cultural Studies Approach to Teaching English. New York: NCTE Publications.

A hands-on book about using theory (critical and cultural) to teach literature. Nikola uses it in her "Teaching Young Adult Literature" course with pre-service English teachers, but it could certainly lend itself to a broader range of uses.

5. Christensen, Linda. (2000). Reading, Writing, and Rising Up: Teaching about Social Justice and the Power of the Written Word. Milwaukee, WI: Rethinking Schools, Ltd.

A fundamental text in our English/ Language Arts Methods courses in secondary teacher education. We have also employed Christensen's ideas in our public school classrooms and professional development seminars. This book couples Christensen's radical teaching philosophy with explicated examples of her practice. The strength of this source is that it can be used across content areas to address race, class and gender issues through literacy skills and also to build politicized learning communities in our classrooms.

6. Delpit, Lisa. (1995). Other People's Children: Cultural Conflict In the Classroom. New York: The New Press.

In these essays, Delpit is interested in identifying how schools privilege and reproduce particular cultural practices and how these practices ultimately dis-empower many poor students and students of color. Throughout the text, Delpit suggests new ways of providing literacy instruction, identifying cultural conflict, and developing inclusive, multicultural pedagogies.

7. Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network of Connecticut. (1999). Tackling Gay Issues in Schools.

The ultimate ready-to-use resource binder of statistics, lesson plans, and step-by-step guides to teaching middle and high school students about gay and lesbian issues. …
