In a post-September 11 world, how do librarians balance the First Amendment rights of their patrons with concerns about terrorism and access to information? Is there a conflict between our cherished traditional professional values and our responsibilities as Americans? How will you respond if the FBI visits your library asking for circulation records? Join ALA President Maurice J. Freedman and a distinguished speaker in an exploration of the legal, moral and ethical complexities surrounding the issues of patriotism, freedom and information.

Covers the structure and utility of Extensible Markup Language (XML) with an emphasis on relevance of XML to libraries. We will discuss the role XML plays in web design (including stylesheets), content management, and descriptive metadara. This workshop is relevant for library webmasters and systems librarians, and anyone interested in web technology or data representation. A basic familiarity with HTML is assumed. Best-Selling Authors Forum to Precede Special Friday Night Exhibition Opening!

Your registration now includes several special Friday night events! First, the Best-Selling Authors Forum from 4:00-5:15 pm in the Pennsylvania Convention Center. We are working with several well-known authors to create a dynamic program--watch the Midwinter Meeting web site for more information. Then, the Exhibits Opening Ceremony and the ALA/ERT All Conference Reception will be held from 5:15-7:30 pm. Due to popular demand, we have added the opportunity to see the exhibits Friday night, while enjoying free food and live music, and numerous chances to register for free baskets, donated by exhibitors. These baskets will only be available Friday night, so don't miss out!

Technology Showcase Theater on the Exhibit Floor

We will once again be holding the Technology Showcase, which will consist of free concurrent programs on the exhibit floor featuring new products and demonstrations and a Philly-style coffee break. See the Final Meeting Program and Cognotes for further information.
