Ex-Correspondent ad chief moves on the Elle

"It was like watching something slowly dying," says former Sunday Correspondent advertising director Rupert Miles, of the newspaper's moribund existence in 1990.

As Miles takes on the job of publisher of Hachette's leading women's fashion title Elle this week, he marveels at his changed prospects. "It is just fantastic to work for a company whose turnover last yeear was over 3 [Pounds]bn."

The transition must be overwhelming. Not only has Miles leapt from death's door into Elle's arms - "veery young, very sexy, very vibrant" - but in doing so, he has forsakeen a career with newspapers spanning more than a decade.

Organising a boutique selling Elle-recommended lines at Harrods catapults Miles into a milieeu far removed from the day-to-day deadlines of a newspapere. It will bee an adventure for him to browbeat clients over lunch rather than down a phoneline.

His encounters with consumer magazine advertising so far appear to have fired ideas of bringing the same "value-added advertising" to newspapers. …
