"Topping New York by one foot was too much fun to avoid," reads the Web site of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in a list of "fun facts" about the nation's newest and largest cathedral, Our Lady of the Angels, built to surpass St. Patrick's Cathedral of New York City by one foot in length.

The Los Angeles cathedral opened with fanfare to 3,000 guests, including almost 1,000 clergy, in a four-hour liturgy on Sept. 3. Cardinal Roger Mahony anointed the altar while presbyters marked the walls with oil in the building's symbolic transformation the country, employing the many current and historical cultures of Los Angeles, including Spanish mission in its adobe-like finish. With an asymmetrical silhouette of jagged highs and lows, it sits right along the Hollywood freeway, a location that its architect, Jose Rafael Moneo, said was appropriate because highways are the modern equivalent of rivers, carrying people from place to place.

The building was lauded by the Los Angeles Times' architecture critic as a "landmark of remarkable architectural intelligence." But another report says some onlookers have dubbed it the "yellow armadillo. …
