Pizza Hut to go Express

The UK's biggest pizza group Pizza Hut is planning a new chain of outlets designed to promote pizza as a truly "fast food".

The new concept, Pizza Hut Express, attacks head on the might of the burger chains by quickly providing slices of pizza and freshly made every 15 minutes.

Pizza Hut Express is already up and running with 150 units in the US, where the first outlet opened in 1987, as well as in Scandinavia and West Germany.

"The whole concept is to produce best quality pizza for any eating occasion," says Pizza Hut brand manager Carol Young. "At this stage we're focused more towards lunch -- the person who doesn't want to eat in a restaurant and wants to have a quality pizza quickly but hasn't the time," she adds.

The essential difference between the takeaway service the chain already offers is speed and the fact it is selling slices.

The first outlet has opened at the Gateshead Garden Festival and further units are planned for the rest of 1990 in a wide variety of locations. …
