Molloy's mystery move alerts press to launch

Mirror Group Newspaper's (MGN) departing editor-in-chief Mike Molloy is pursuing a secret project with unnamed partners which is likely to shake up further, the fast-changing print media scene.

Molloy, who has been a key part of MGN for 28 years, is coy about what the project might be. However, he has twice been involved in preparing dummies of a colour, middle-market tabloid for the Maxwell-owned group. These wore a cloak of confidentiality similar to the present project.

He most recently worked as editor on Maxwell's forthcoming weekly pan-European title, the European. Despite a series of disagreements with Maxwell over the paper's viability, which clearly show him to be his own man, Molloy appears to have left MGN on amicable terms.

"I am about to publish a novel, and now that Ian Watson has taken over as editor of the European it is an opportune time for me to leave while I am not caught up in any projects and I am still under 50. …
