It is said that when an advertising agency runs into financial trouble, the first reaction of most clients is one of surprising loyalty. The agency's own staff can be another matter. Once the first "name" jumps ship, so the wisdom goes, the rest are swiftly expected to follow suit.

So it is perhaps remarkable that, despite all the flak, Saatchi and Saatchi has held together until now. And the flak has certainly been considerable: one of the most curious aspects of the problems facing Saatchis is the very real perception that there are a lot of people who want the group to fail. You can see it in the press, and you can hear it in the comments of those who work both inside and outside marketing. The Saatchis, if you like, are fair game.
