THE BOARD GAME IN CHRIS VAN ALLSBURG'S JUMANJI BROUGHT A menagerie of jungle animals to life and sent them tearing through young imaginations. Twenty years later--following Jumanji's 1995 film adaptation and the success of several mysterious tales, including The Polar Express--the author returns with another story about a magical game.

Why did you write Zathura?

There was a high level of interest on the part of children who had read Jumanji, because the ending is unresolved. So I knew t, here was some curiosity about what might have become of Walter and Danny Budwing, the boys who discover the game at the end.

Were you originally thinking of keeping the jungle theme?

Once you've seen jungle animals go through one place, it's not going to be that much more interesting to see them go through another part of the house. The fact is, when I wrote Jumanji, I had a few games in mind, though none was an outer space game. Then twenty years later, when I revisited it, I thought it would be quite interesting to juxtapose what we think of as the safety of home with the perils of outer space in the same way those juxtapositions were employed in Jumanji. There's something about taking the security of the house and changing it around by letting the adventures we associate with going outside happen in the living room.

Will there be a movie sequel?

The studio that made Jumanji saw the sequel and thought it was a pretty good idea. …
