New Artistic Directors Learn Skills. (News from TCG)

THE NEW ARTISTIC LEADER Institute, an intensive program for new and prospective artistic leaders, was held July 11-14, 2002, at the Woods Conference Center, a 1,800-acre resort in the town of Hedgesville in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. Developed in response to the lack of training available for first-time artistic directors, the institute provided its nine attendees with an introduction to, and analysis of, some of the skills that are indispensable to running a theatre company--fiscal management, marketing, community involvement, board relations and partnership, for example. First-time artistic directors of TCG member theatres, as well as associate artistic directors interested in exploring the possibilities of artistic leadership, were invited to attend the retreat.

Conducting the workshops were theatre professionals from across the country, including Jessica Andrews, managing director, Arizona Theatre Company; Joan Channick, deputy director, TCG; Ed Herendeen, producing director, Contemporary American Theater Festival; Catherine Irwin, managing director, Contemporary American Theater Festival; Michael Ross, managing director, Center Stage; and Donna Walker-Kuhne, director of marketing and audience development, the Joseph Papp Public Theater. …
