Palm, the world's biggest maker of personal digital assistants (PDAs), has appointed Franck Gaget as European marketing director.

Gaget's task is to oversee the marketing strategy of the just-launched mainstream consumer product, the Palm Zire, as well as the Palm Tungsten, which targets professionals. Palm aims to re-establish its credentials as the technology leader in the handheld computing market.

Gaget has been promoted from marketing manager for Europe and replaces Laurence Clavere, who has left the company. Gaget joined Palm three years ago from Sony Europe where he was a marketing manager.

Palm has also struck a deal with Wal-Mart to distribute the Zire to 250 Asda stores in the UK, signalling the company's intent to capture the mainstream consumer market.

The Zire launched on October 7 and has an estimated street price of between pounds 79 and pounds 99, significantly lower priced than its flagship Pilot range or any other Palm product. Billed by the company as 'an affordable way to organise your life' it is stripped of advanced features and functions mainly as an electronic personal organiser. …
