Horseracing Appoints Ex-Telewest Marketer

The British Horseracing Board (BHB) has handed former Telewest marketer Chris John the tough task of restoring faith in the sport.

The appointment, which ends a year-long search for a marketing director, comes just three months after a BBC documentary broadcast allegations of corruption.

John, whose most recent job was marketing director of Telewest's business division, joined the BHB this week. He replaces Teresa Cash, who left last year to run a sports marketing consultancy.

John, who has also worked for Scottish & Newcastle and Dunlop Slazenger, will be responsible for all aspects of BHB marketing, including the promotion of racing, ownership, British bloodstock and sponsorship.

He reports to BHB chief executive Greg Nichols and oversees a 20-strong marketing department.

John's appointment comes at a turbulent time for the sport, which was rocked by allegations in a Panorama programme in October that some of the country's most senior jockeys had links to organised crime.

More recently, a row over the racecard data supplied to national newspapers led to a climbdown by the BHB. …
