Two thousand and two was a particularly challenging year, to say the least. Churn in the supplier market, layoffs, and significant economic struggles for all organizations have dominated the headlines in the learning and performance industry.

Despite this turmoil, our community is stronger than ever and I see several positive shifts taking place. One, more personal and professional connections are happening every day--virtually or in person--among members of the learning and performance profession. These connections are especially meaningful during organizational changes and career transitions, two things that many of us have experienced during the past year.

In addition, more learning professionals understand the importance of connecting their work to organizational goals and strategies. Current economic challenges force many training departments to show how their work directly affects business results. I can assure you that this focus on performance is here to stay.

Last, organizations are continuing to invest in employee learning and development. Recent data from the "ASTD State of the Industry Update Report" shows that the "Training Investment Leaders"--a group of organizations that have made a dedicated commitment to developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of their employees--increased their emphasis on training through investments 2000 to 2001. …
