We were shocked to see our president included in your cover story "The Troubled Presidency" in the July/August issue of University Business. Since when does making tough, but necessary decisions automatically label an executive as "troubled"? A small but vocal group of dissidents did, indeed, criticize Fr. Privett's decision to replace the director and assistant director of the University of San Francisco's Saint Ignatius Institute (SII), our prestigious Catholic Great Books program. Out of more than 750 faculty members, six signed a letter protesting the decision; one later recanted. No faculty member left the university because of this decision. Since the SII decision, Fr. Privett has ratified a new faculty contract, witnessed the most successful fundraising year in the university's history, successfully handled a $5 million budget deficit, opened a new apartment complex that virtually eliminates a severe student housing crunch, dedicated a state-of-the-art law library, initiated physical renovations at both the law and business schools, opened a world class computer classroom/lab, inaugurated a new Center for Public Service, enrolled the largest and one of the strongest freshman classes in recent history, and celebrated a U. …
