Not just flaky, but launched and sunk in only 2 days in early 2001 because of overwhelming demand, the searchable U.K. 1901 Census site is finally getting into shape. Service availability has now increased to 24/7, but researchers are restricted to 2 hours of continuous use, with at least one operation performed every 15 minutes in order to stay active on the system.

The 1901 Census for England and Wales was taken on March 31, 1901. It can be searched via a comprehensive name index of more than 32 million individuals. The results can be viewed as transcribed in the digitization project or as images of the original census pages written by the census enumerator in 1901. Transcription has naturally introduced mistakes into the data, but users are able to report instances of error. Corrections will be made to the file every 3 months if appropriate.

A "Person Search" provides brief details of all individuals with that name; their age; where they were born; and their occupation, if known. The search is free, but after having identified the correct individual from the list, a full transcription record for that person can be viewed for [pounds sterling]. …
