Women Ignoring Checkup Guidelines. (Your Life)

For years, physicians have recommended that women older than 18 visit their physician for an annual checkup and Pap test. Yet, a survey conducted on behalf of the Vagisil Women's Health Center (VWHC) discovered that 17% of respondents are not visiting their doctors annually and 28% do not have Pap tests each year. Of those women who are not visiting their physicians annually, 41% do not think that annual physicals and Pap tests are necessary, as they do not have any current health problems; 30% dislike the exam so much that they put it off until they have a problem; 26% say they don't have insurance and can't afford to go; 19% "forget to do it"; 17% were not aware that an annual exam is recommended; 13% are "afraid of what the doctor might find"; and nine percent don't go because they don't like their doctor. (Multiple answers were permitted.)

According to the American Society for Clinical Pathology website, cervical cancer is one of the most-preventable and curable of all feminine diseases, yet is the fifth-leading cause of death from cancer in women. Most of these deaths occur in those who have never had a Pap test. …
