Johnson & Johnson has 197 operating companies in 54 countries around the world, and sells its products in more than 175 countries. Johnson & Johnson's products cover a broad range of medical applications including baby care, first aid, hospital products, over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals and diagnostics.

The group also has a 50/50 joint venture in the UK with US drug manufacturer Merck, called Johnson & Johnson MSD Consumer Pharmaceuticals. This markets a range of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, previously only available on prescription.

Johnson & Johnson's core business is split into three UK business sectors: pharmaceuticals and diagnostics (Janssen-Cilag); professional (J&J Medical, Ethicon) and consumer products.

Johnson & Johnson was founded in New Jersey, US in 1886, when it developed the first ready-to-use surgical dressings. It started to expand overseas in 1919 and its first international operation was established in the UK in 1924.

The past year-and-a-half saw several product launches. In November 2001, Johnson & Johnson launched an easy-fix heartburn remedy, which it backed with more than pounds 2m of TV and radio support. Pepcidtwo promises 12-hour relief from heartburn and indigestion in just two minutes.

In February 2002, Johnson & Johnson was given the go-ahead to manufacture a contraceptive skin patch to rival the Pill. The patch, called Evra, was approved by the European Medicines Agency and has been recognised as one of the biggest leaps forward for hormonal contraception since the Pill was launched more than 40 years ago. …
