FITNESS GURU PAT CROCE, THE FORMER president and current minority owner of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, is standing in his library showing off his newest acquisition: Captain Kidd's final journal, which he purchased at an auction. "There's some serious blood on this one," he says, carefully flipping the pages. Croce is a dedicated reader: By day, he reads biographies and leadership tomes by the likes of Richard Branson and Rick Pitino; by night, he devours the fiction of David Baldacci, Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn.

Croce's is a rags-to-riches story: He grew up in working-class Philly, made a fortune on sports conditioning and physical therapy clinics and then partnered with cable giant Comcast Corp. to buy the 76ers in 1993 for $140 million.
