NEW ENGLAND

Hartford Life Insurance Co. in Connecticut has promoted Carol A. Harnett to national practice leader for group disability and life insurance in its group benefits division.

She had been the director of wellness and ability management.

Ms. Harnett, who is a clinical physiologist, will also lead the company's "center for ability," which provides resources to help disability claimants return to work.

Before joining the Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. unit in 1996 she had been the director of resources and rehabilitation at Prudential Financial Inc. of New York.

MIDDLE ATLANTIC

Sovereign Bancorp Inc. of Wyomissing, Pa., has hired S. Peter Albert as an executive vice president.

He will be in charge of developing relationships with commercial banking and real estate customers in the Philadelphia area.

Mr. Albert was the vice chairman of Bancorp Bank, an Internet-based bank in Wilmington, Del., that he helped establish in 2000. Before that he had been the vice chairman at Jefferson Bank of Philadelphia; he left after Hudson United Bancorp of Mahwah, N.J., bought its parent, JeffBanks Inc., in 1999.

Earlier in Mr. Albert's 25 years as a banking executive he had been a co-founder and the president and chief executive officer of Meridian Mortgage Corp. of Saint Davids, Pa. (Its parent, Meridian Bancorp, is among the companies that went into what is now Wachovia Corp.)
