Risperidone May Relieve Bipolar Mania Symptoms. (Quick Acting)

Risperidone appears to offer significant and quick relief to bipolar mania symptoms.

Patients with bipolar I--characterized by pronounced manic symptoms--showed significant improvements in their symptoms after beginning treatment with risperidone (Risperdal), Dr. Robert Hirschfeld commented in a teleconference on the treatment of bipolar disorder sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceutica.

In a placebo-controlled, double-blind study roughly half of 259 patients who had bipolar I were randomly treated with an initial dose of 3 mg per day of risperidone.

Dosing was -adjusted for each patient but remained between 1 and 6 mg per day.

All patients had a Young Mania Rating Scale score of at least 20. By the end of the first week, those on risperidone had a roughly 50% drop in manic symptom score.

That group had a mean drop of 11.1 points, compared with a mean drop of 5 points for those in the placebo group, said Dr. Hirschfeld, chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Texas, Galveston. …
