Commonwealth Films has created an exceptionally useful video on business continuity and preparedness. Through two dramatized disaster scenarios, the video accomplishes three objectives: it gets the attention of viewers (the intended audience is management and staff); it points out the need for participation in the planning process across organizational lines; and it emphasizes the need to take a broad view of crisis planning.

While the video is an attention-getter, it doesn't fall into the trap of exclusively addressing large-scale disasters. The producers realize that smaller crises are much more common and that they too can disrupt business considerably.

The video also stresses that the best crisis management plan is one developed by a diverse team. Not only will such a plan ensure greater effectiveness, but the development process will also lead to greater "buy-in" throughout the organization.

In its emphasis on taking a broad view of crisis planning, the video advocates considering personnel, the facility, and information in concert. …
