Tough Times for Buff Protests. (Nation in Brief)

One problem for protesters during the next few months is that in most parts of the country the weather isn't conducive to public nudity. In the tradition of Lady Godiva, and with frank acknowledgment that the aim of the game is to attract media attention, stripping down to the bare essentials has become a favorite tactic of those promoting a variety of causes, from animal rights to anticapitalism, with the "Give Peace a Chance" contingent leading the pack.

Of course, winter does provide planning time for activists out to top last year's events. Those events included a gathering of 30 women in Marin County, Calif., who arranged their naked bodies to spell out "peace" and a similar effort by 22 men in Gainesville, Fla., in December. Photographer John Moran recorded both efforts. Some of the participants were college students, a segment of society known for its willingness to do the outrageous, while others ranged up into their 70s. In a twist on the usual order of such admonitions, a young columnist for the University Wire college-press service chided the elderly participants: "They're old enough to know better. …
